About Amethyst
Amethyst has been a prized gem for centuries and at one time was considered as valuable as diamonds. Amethyst is named after a story from Ancient Greek mythology, in which a young virgin upset the Greek god Dionysus after he became intoxicated with red wine. She was turned to quartz, but after Dionysus released what had happened, his tears mixed with the red wine and turned the white crystal to purple.
In keeping with the legend, Greek drinking vessels were often adorned with Amethyst to prevent intoxication. To this day, there is an association between Amethyst and the detachment from intoxication.
